New measures to safeguard the safety of cyclists and pedestrians in the University Park

"We will do everything we can to make sure this doesn’t happen again," says Head of AU Buildings Charlotte Lyngholm, after a young female cyclist died after a traffic accident in the University Park on 5 March.

Last week, Head of AU Buildings Charlotte Lyngholm was at a meeting with Aarhus Municipality’s Centre for City Development and Mobility to discuss how to improve road safety in the University Park, after a female student lost her life after a traffic accident on 5 March.

Charlotte Lyngholm brought a number of proposals for specific initiatives to the meeting.

"What we want is for them to look at the safety of the park as a whole rather than just looking at the intersection where the accident occurred. There mustn’t be any areas where we still have safety concerns," she says.

She mentions the Lakeside Lecture Theatres as an example of an area where there is a lot of activity and where people must therefore be even more careful.

At the meeting the parties discussed speed bumps, better signage and alternative locations of parking spaces which block visibility.

In addition, Charlotte Lyngholm hopes that the speed limit can be lowered from the current 50 km/h.

"We are looking for enforcement of a speed limit of maximum 30 km/h an hour for the whole area," she says.

The next step in the planning is an inspection of the park with participation of representatives from AU, Aarhus Municipality, the police and daily users in the area in order to pinpoint the critical locations.

According to Charlotte Lyngholm, Aarhus Municipality is very attentive towards AU's proposals.

"I’m certain we will come up with some sensible solutions. Exactly which we do not know yet, but everyone has an interest in doing something about this," she says.
