AU students want to hold more camps for young people with cancer

The two medical students from AU who held a rehabilitation camp for children and young people with cancer last summer have really got an appetite for more after their experiences at the camp.

"We’ve received positive evaluations from both participants and volunteers. The group of participants worked well together and the efforts our volunteers made were fantastic. All the hard work was well worth the effort to see these young people brighten up. Many of them told us that it was the best week they’ve ever had. That’s really the best feedback you can get," says one of the two organisers, Rasmus Thøger Christensen.

"What a succes"

A parent to one of the participants wrote in her evaluation of the camp:

"I’m sitting here with tears of joy in my eyes. What a success, a big THANK YOU to you and all the volunteers. I’ve got a daughter who has experienced something she will never forget, learned a lot about herself and not least, found a lot of new friends who understand all the things many others will never understand …"

Another camp coming up - hopefully

Together with Heidi Kristine Støve, Rasmus Thøger Christensen has just sent an application to the Child Cancer Foundation to apply for funding to organise another Cool Camp for young people with cancer next year.

"We’ve also applied for funding to hold a reunion for the young people who took part in this year’s camp, as several of them have experienced a void after the camp and miss their Cool Camp friends. A reunion will also give us the opportunity to follow-up on the participants' development since the camp. We’ve also applied for funding for a camp for young siblings of young people affected by cancer," says Rasmus Thøger Christensen.
