It’s a question of trust

In 2013 and 2014 Robert C. Putnam has been appointed as a distinguished visiting professor at AU. The Harvard professor, who is regarded as one of the most influential social-science researchers in the world today, will be giving his inaugural lecture at the MatchPoints Seminar which is to be held on 23-25 May.

This is why the conference will be taking its point of departure in Putnam’s research on social capital – the resource that lies in the mutual trust that citizens have both in each other and in the public-sector institutions that direct their affairs.

The other speakers include Will Kymlicka, John A. Hall, John Hutchinson and the political philosopher Fareed Zakaria from CNN and Time Magazine. Frederik Stjernfelt and Georg Sørensen from AU will also be among the keynote speakers.

In connection with the conference there will be two public debates, and several of the lectures will be recorded on a video that can be viewed on the AU homepage.

Prejudiced? Moi?

Science researchers tend to be men, while the Arts are for women. Is that right? In just 15 minutes you can test your gender prejudices within the world of academe.

The test is a so-called implicit association test to study the conscious and unconscious differences between what we say and what we do.

You’ll find the test on AU’s new site for gender equality at ger.au.dk (this is only in Danish at present).

Find your union representative

The homepage www.medarbejdere.au.dk contains a list of union representatives, as well as a list of the trade unions represented at AU (this information is only in Danish at present).

Click on “Medarbejderservice” and then “HR”. You’ll find the list under the tab marked “Ansættelse”.

Want to share your knowledge with other people?

“Talerøret” is an enterprise that has been launched by two students of Anthropology at AU to arrange lectures given by university students. They are currently looking for a handful of new lecturers.

“We’d like to hear from any students who feel strongly about something and want to share their knowledge with a wider audience,” explains Vibeke Christoffersen, the co-owner of Talerøret.

She is looking for students with a strong subject base who are also good communicators.

“You need to be aware of your audience, and you have to communicate what you know so it becomes relevant for the people you’re talking to,” she says.

The people responsible for Talerøret are open to all kinds of topics and don’t mind a few surprises!

The deadline for applications is 6 May. For more information, please go to the Danish website at taleroeret.dk
