Facts: Honours programme at the Department of Physics and Astronomy, autumn 2013

The honours programme is worth 35 ECTS credits on top of the 180 ECTS credits generated by the standard full-time degree programme. Apart from their extra study activities, students on the honours programme attend the same standard programme as the rest of their class.

All interested students are introduced to the honours programme at the start of their studies. And anyone wishing to take part (the teaching is in English) can join the programme during their first year at university. Students on the honours programme work independently under a supervisor – they don’t attend any lectures, for instance.

However, students cannot continue on the second and third years of the programme unless they are deemed to be suitable. The academic content of the final two years has not been finally decided yet.

The students must spend three days on an experimental project to conclude this part of the programme. They also have two weeks’ break during the first year of study

The students are offered two options during the break:

1. Write a report based on a set theoretical project in extension of the standard programme.

1.5 ECTS (approx. 40 hours)

2. Write a report on the basis of specified experimental studies in the lab in extension of the standard programme.

The honours programme is a pilot project which is part of the Bachelor’s degree programme at the Department of Physics and Astronomy. It has been planned by the dean’s office at ST and is organised by the Department of Physics and Astronomy. The honours programme reflects the strategy of the senior management team: Bachelor students who are able to meet greater academic challenges than those they encounter on the standard full-time programme should be given the opportunity to increase their level of study activity.
